Replacing Reclining Mechanism in the B-Series
In this tutorial, we walk you through the process of replacing the reclining mechanism cylinder on a Collins B-Series chair. This includes both lever and finger control models. You'll learn how to remove the old cylinder, install the new one, and reassemble the chair correctly for smooth reclining functionality.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Tools Needed:
- 7/16” wrench
- ½” wrench
- Standard Allen wrenches
- Zip ties
- Diagonal cutters (to trim zip ties)
- Replacement reclining cylinder
1. Prepare the Chair
- Lay the Chair on its Back or Side: Begin by gently laying the chair down on its back or side for easy access to the underside.
- Remove the Seat: The seat is attached by four bolts. Use a 7/16” wrench to remove the bolts. There is a lock washer, washer, and nut in each position; make sure to keep them in the same order for reassembly.
2. Locate the Reclining Mechanism Cylinder
- Find the Cylinder: After removing the seat, locate the reclining mechanism cylinder underneath.
- Zip Tie Placement: Place two zip ties to secure the cylinder in place. The first zip tie should go on the head assembly forward of the nut, and the second should go at the back, securing the mechanism.
3. Remove the Old Cylinder
- Loosen and Remove the Bolt: Work on removing the bolt that secures the cylinder. Pay attention to the placement of the washers and the black spacer, as these need to be reinstalled in the same order.
- Loosen the Nut: Use a ½” wrench to loosen the nut securing the mechanism. You may need to hold the Allen wrench on one side to loosen the nut. This step might be tight, so proceed carefully.
4. Prepare the New Cylinder for Installation
- Transfer Parts: Before installing the new cylinder, transfer the bolt, washer, and retaining nut to the new cylinder.
- Install the New Cylinder: Place the new cylinder into position. Use the ratcheting wrench to tighten the bolt securely. Make sure the nut is only hand-tight; do not over-tighten it.
5. Install the Mechanism and Reassemble
- Align the Mechanism: If the bolt holes don’t line up due to the chair's reclined position, adjust the chair until the holes align properly. Then, proceed to insert and tighten the front bolt with the flat washer, black spacer, and washer.
- Install the Rear Bolt: Similarly, install the rear bolt and washers in the proper order.
6. Reinstall the Cable
- Attach the Cable: Hook the cable into its designated slot, ensuring it engages with the little hook. The cable should press down firmly into the assembly.
- Secure with Zip Ties: Use zip ties to hold the cable in place, pulling it snugly to avoid it popping out of the assembly. Trim any excess with diagonal cutters.
7. Reinstall the Seat
- Attach the Seat: Reinstall the seat by aligning it with the four holes. Insert the washers, lock washers, and nuts in the correct order. Tighten the bolts, but don’t over-tighten them to avoid damaging the chair’s wood.
8. Final Check
- Test the Reclining Mechanism: Once everything is securely reassembled, test the reclining mechanism by reclining the chair. Ensure the seat moves smoothly and properly.
By following these steps, you'll successfully replace the reclining mechanism cylinder in your Collins B-Series chair, ensuring that it functions properly for future use.
