Replacing a recline mechanism on an all purpose chair

This tutorial guides you through the process of swapping out the all-purpose mechanism on a Collins chair, specifically for model 7710, though the procedure is applicable to all similar models. You’ll learn how to remove the old mechanism, install the new one, and ensure the chair functions properly after the swap.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Tools Needed:

  1. 5/64” allen wrench (for removing screws)
  2. 7/16” wrench (for removing bolts from the seat)
  3. 7/16” socket and ratchet (for faster bolt removal)

1. Remove the Back of the Chair

  • Unfasten the Screws: Begin by removing the four screws on the back of the chair using a 5/64” allen wrench.
    • Tip: If you lose or damage any screws, Collins chairs use SAE rated screws (quarter-twenty screws), which are available at hardware stores like Lowe's, Home Depot, or Autozone.
  • Set Aside the Back: After removing all screws, set the back piece aside for now.

2. Remove the Chair from the Pump

  • Release the Treadle: Hold down the treadle and lift the chair off the pump.
  • Use the Wrench: Use the 7/16” wrench (or socket and ratchet for quicker removal) to unscrew and remove the bolts that secure the chair to the pump.

3. Identify and Remove the All-Purpose Mechanism

  • Remove the Mechanism: The all-purpose mechanism should be removed by unscrewing it from the base. Note that you need to use the second hole back (not the last hole) when removing and reinstalling the mechanism.
    • Important: Newer all-purpose mechanisms may have a Collins logo, which helps identify them.

4. Install the New All-Purpose Mechanism

  • Line Up the Holes: Position the new mechanism so that the bolt holes line up with the ones in the chair base.
  • Start the Bolts: Insert and hand-start all four bolts before tightening anything down.
  • Tighten the Bolts: Use your wrench to tighten the bolts securely, but do not overtighten.

5. Reinstall the Chair onto the Pump

  • Align the Chair: Place the chair back onto the pump, ensuring the slot in the seat casting is pointing to the front and aligns with the roll pin.
  • Reinstall the Bolts: Secure the four bolts that were previously removed from the back of the chair. Start all four bolts before tightening them down completely.
  • Test the Mechanism: Once the chair is securely attached, test the all-purpose mechanism by releasing and pushing back the chair. It should move smoothly.

6. Reinstall the Footrest

  • Install the Access Footrest (if applicable): For chairs with an access footrest (useful for clients with limited mobility), rotate and position the footrest as needed so the client can easily get their feet under them for standing up.

7. Final Test and Adjustments

  • Ensure Proper Functionality: Once everything is in place, test the chair’s reclining and footrest functions again. The mechanism should work smoothly, and the footrest should properly adjust.

By following these steps, you'll be able to swap out the all-purpose mechanism on your Collins chair, ensuring it’s ready for use with proper reclining and footrest functionality.
