How a French Cleat Works for Collins Salon & Barber Equipment

A French cleat is a versatile and secure method for mounting items such as mirrors, upper cabinets, and retail displays. This guide walks you through the steps for using a French cleat, ensuring proper installation and alignment.

1. Understanding the French Cleat System

  • A French cleat consists of two pieces:

    • Wall-Mounted Cleat: Attaches to the wall.

    • Product Cleat: Pre-attached to the back of the item being mounted.

  • When properly installed, the two cleat pieces interlock securely, supporting the item.

2. Preparing for Installation

  1. Measure the Item:

    • Measure the distance from the cleat on the item to the bottom of the item (e.g., cabinet or mirror).

    • Measure the distance from the cleat to the floor or desired mounting height.

  2. Mark the Wall:

    • Use the measurements to mark the desired height on the wall where the wall-mounted cleat will be installed.

3. Installing the Wall-Mounted Cleat

  1. Detach the Cleat:

    • Remove the wall-mounted portion of the French cleat from the back of the product.

  2. Align the Cleat:

    • Position the wall-mounted cleat at the marked height.

    • Ensure it is level before proceeding.

  3. Secure the Cleat:

    • Screw the cleat into the wall using appropriate screws and anchors for your wall type (e.g., drywall, concrete, or studs).

4. Mounting the Product

  1. Adjust for Retail Displays (if applicable):

    • For heavy retail displays that rest on the floor, position the cleat slightly lower (about 1/16th of an inch) to prevent the cleat from bearing the entire weight.

  2. Hang the Product:

    • Align the product’s cleat with the wall-mounted cleat.

    • Slide the product down until the two cleats interlock securely.

5. Final Adjustments

  1. Check Stability:

    • Ensure the product is securely mounted and does not wobble.

  2. Additional Fastening (if required):

    • For larger or heavier items, bolt the product to the wall for added security.

Tips and Notes

  • Always use a level to ensure proper alignment of the cleats.

  • For heavier items, verify the cleat’s load capacity and use additional supports if necessary.

  • French cleats simplify the process of hanging items and make them easy to remove or adjust later.

By following these steps, you can efficiently and securely mount items using a French cleat system.
