Changing out K and G base cylinders

This tutorial will guide you through the process of replacing the cylinder on chairs with either a K base or G base. We will cover both bases, including how to detach the seat, remove and replace the pump, and reassemble the chair. Follow the step-by-step instructions to ensure a smooth replacement.

 

Steps for Replacing the Cylinder on a K Base:

  1. Pump the Chair Fully Up:

    • Ensure the chair's pump is pumped all the way up. If it doesn't pump, pull it up manually.

  2. Remove the Seat:

    • There are four bolts that attach the seat to the base. Use an alternating tapping method on the bolts to loosen them.
    • One person should hold the seat while the other taps the bolts until the seat detaches from the base.

  3. Inspect the Label:

    • Check the label on the bottom of the seat to find the sales order number and chair style/model number. This information is essential for warranty claims.

  4. Remove the Old Cylinder:

    • Use a 4mm Allen wrench to remove the screws that hold the treadle in place.
    • Locate the two nuts at the bottom of the pump, which are typically 13mm (or use a ½-inch socket). Loosen these nuts and remove the pump.

  5. Install the New Cylinder:

    • Position the new cylinder, making sure the orientation is correct.
    • Tighten the screws securely, making sure the treadle is positioned correctly.

  6. Reattach the Chair Seat:

    • Place the seat back on the chair base, ensuring the pin and notch are aligned.
    • This will allow the chair to be pumped easily.


Steps for Replacing the Cylinder on a G Base:

  1. Remove the Chair Seat:

    • Just like the K base, detach the seat using the same method of tapping on the four bolts.

  2. Remove the Old Roll Pin (if necessary):

    • If you need to reuse the old roll pin, use a quarter-inch bolt and a hammer to drive it out.

  3. Remove the Treadle:

    • Use a 4mm Allen wrench to remove the set screws from the treadle. Remove the treadle as you did with the K base.

  4. Remove the Pump:

    • Use a 6mm Allen wrench to remove the socket head bolts under the pump.
    • Once the bolts are removed, the pump can be taken out.

  5. Install the New Pump:

    • Place the new pump into position and secure it by tightening the bolts back in.

  6. Reassemble the Chair:

    • Attach the chair seat back onto the base, ensuring it’s aligned correctly. The chair should now be ready for use.
