Brake adjustment on Collins/Jeffco "G" base

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for adjusting the brake on the G Base used in corporate account and Jeffco chairs. This process ensures your chair’s pump operates smoothly and holds the desired position effectively.

1. Preparation

  1. Ensure the chair is pumped to its maximum height:

    • This provides better access to the brake adjustment mechanism.

  2. Remove the cap from the pump:

    • Set the cap aside in a safe place.

2. Understand the Brake Mechanism

  1. The G Base brake consists of:

    • A jam nut (inner nut).

    • An outer adjustment nut.

  2. Required tools:

    • A 17mm wrench (an 11/16-inch wrench may work if a 17mm is unavailable).

3. Initial Adjustment Steps

  1. Ensure the brake is in neutral (not engaged):

    • This prevents the chair from locking during adjustment.

  2. Use the wrench to tighten the outer nut slightly:

    • Make small adjustments to avoid over-tightening.

    • Check the brake function after each adjustment by testing the chair’s hold.

4. Advanced Adjustments (if necessary)

  1. If the outer nut alone does not resolve the issue:

    • Hold the jam nut in place with one wrench.

    • Rotate the outer nut counterclockwise to loosen it.

    • Adjust the jam nut to the desired position.

  2. Once the inner adjustment is complete:

    • Snug the outer nut back into place while holding the jam nut stationary.

    • Ensure both nuts are secure without overtightening.

5. Test the Brake

  1. After each adjustment, test the brake:

    • Place the chair in its operating position and check if the brake holds as desired.

    • Repeat the adjustment process as needed until the brake functions properly.

  2. Make minor adjustments incrementally:

    • Small changes are more effective and prevent over-correction.

Important Notes:

  • Avoid engaging the brake during adjustments.

  • Always make incremental adjustments and test frequently.

  • Refer to the Collins chairs brake adjustment video for additional guidance if needed, as the mechanisms are similar.

Your G Base brake should now be properly adjusted for optimal performance. For further assistance, consult the manufacturer’s support team or resources.
